Maldives Pursues Closer Economic Relations with Malaysia

The Maldives has expressed interest in expanding economic engagement with Malaysia as the two countries mark more than five decades of diplomatic relations.
President Muizzu referred to the scope for deeper cooperation in separate messages sent to Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the country’s Independence Day.

The President said relations between the Maldives and Malaysia had developed through regular high-level engagements, institutional cooperation and exchanges between their peoples. He indicated that further economic cooperation could create additional opportunities for both countries.
Malaysia is an important education, healthcare and travel destination for Maldivians, while the two countries also maintain cooperation across several areas of mutual interest.
President Muizzu conveyed Independence Day greetings on behalf of the Maldivian Government and public, along with wishes for Malaysia’s continued progress and prosperity. He also shared a message marking the occasion on his official X account.
