Gov’t to Award Contracts for Two Multi-Story Parking Buildings in Malé

The government plans to award contracts for the construction of two multi-story parking facilities in Malé as part of broader efforts to resolve persistent congestion and vehicle parking issues across the Greater Malé region.

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced the plan during a press conference at the President’s Office today, confirming that authorities are finalizing discussions with a developer to construct modern parking complexes at the former Heenaamaage plot and the Sosun Magu parking zone. Practical construction work will commence shortly after the government signs the agreements.

The initiative forms part of a wider infrastructure development plan to construct seven dedicated parking facilities across Malé, Hulhumalé, and Villimalé. Once completed, the seven buildings will create more than 2,600 parking bays for four-wheeled vehicles and over 1,000 spaces for two-wheeled vehicles.

Minister Saeed emphasized that the administration is executing an expanded parking policy, offering five additional parking management options alongside the physical developments. He noted that discussions are actively moving forward with identified parties to set up state-of-the-art parking amenities on the designated plots.

This development follows the foundation laid in March for a 13-storey parking structure in Hulhumalé Phase 1. That facility, which includes a basement level, will accommodate over 1,100 two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles upon completion.
