Yameen Accuses Muizzu Gov’t of Concentrating State Powers and Failing to Curb Corruption 

Former President Abdulla Yameen has accused President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration of concentrating state powers and weakening independent institutions, speaking at a People’s National Front (PNF) rally last night.

Yameen said the government had blurred the separation of powers established under the Constitution and described the administration as taking on the characteristics of an authoritarian regime. He argued that institutions such as the Elections Commission and Anti-Corruption Commission must remain independent of executive influence.

He also criticised what he described as a lack of investigations into alleged corruption involving government supporters, including the allocation of land plots in Hulhumalé. Yameen said public frustration was growing as ordinary people faced economic difficulties while wealthy individuals continued to accumulate wealth.

Turning to the judiciary and Parliament, Yameen criticised a recent Supreme Court ruling concerning the loss of parliamentary party membership. While saying he did not intend to disrespect the court, he argued that the ruling had prioritised party interests over the constitutional role of MPs to hold the government accountable.

Yameen said accountability of the government was among the most important responsibilities of the People’s Majlis, alongside its legislative function, and argued that this constitutional responsibility should not be undermined by political party interests.
