MP Falah Hits Back at Yameen, Accuses Him of Facilitating ‘Record-Level’ Corruption

Inguraidhoo MP and ruling PNC parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah has hit back at former President Abdulla Yameen, accusing his administration of facilitating “record-level” corruption and weakening independent institutions.

Falah made the remarks in a post on X in response to Yameen’s criticism of the current administration at a People’s National Front (PNF) rally last night. Yameen had accused the government of concentrating state powers, weakening independent institutions and failing to investigate alleged corruption involving government supporters.

Falah questioned Yameen’s criticism of corruption, claiming that “world-record levels of corruption” were set during the former president’s administration. He also accused Yameen of keeping the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) ineffective during his presidency.

Falah questioned the source of funding for properties associated with Yameen, including G. Dhoovehi and an 18-storey five-star hotel being developed under the same name in Henveiru.

He also raised allegations concerning funds held in fixed deposits and investment accounts in Singapore and Dubai, questioning whether the public had forgotten about the money.

The PNC lawmaker further criticised Yameen’s record on state institutions, asking whether he had manipulated the composition of the Supreme Court, ordered the arrest and imprisonment of senior judges, and removed the chief justice during his presidency.

Falah also pointed to legislation under which MPs could lose their parliamentary seats after switching political parties, as well as the removal of political leaders and vice-presidents during Yameen’s administration.

Yameen, who served as president from 2013 to 2018, has recently intensified his criticism of the current government and has accused the administration of undermining constitutional checks and balances.

His remarks at the PNF rally also targeted the Supreme Court over a recent ruling concerning the loss of parliamentary party membership. Yameen argued that the court had prioritised party interests over the constitutional responsibility of MPs to hold the government accountable.
