Muizzu Calls for Unity and ‘Maldives First’ Approach at PNC Congress

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on members of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) to put national interests ahead of political considerations, urging the party to remain united and promote stability in the Maldives.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the PNC congress at the Social Centre, Muizzu called on members to work “in one spirit and as one family” under a “Country First” approach.

“All party members must act in one spirit and as one family, prioritising the national interest, advancing the party’s interest, and always remembering that ‘Country First’ is our motto,” President Muizzu said.

The President said the PNC should seek to set an example for greater political stability in the country, describing unity within the ruling party as an important part of that effort.

Muizzu also highlighted the growth of the PNC’s membership since his administration took office on 19 November 2023. According to figures cited by the President, the party had around 3,000 members at the time, while its membership has since increased to nearly 80,000. However, official records from the Elections Commission list the PNC’s registered membership at 67,579 as of 30 June 2026. 

Outlining the party’s priorities, Muizzu identified political stability, economic development and national security as key areas of focus.

He said the government’s domestic policies would continue to emphasise nationalism, religious values, cultural heritage and national identity. In foreign policy, he reiterated his administration’s “Maldives First” approach, which he said would guide the country’s international relations.

The President also criticised what he described as irresponsible opposition activities, saying actions by political opponents could contribute to public unrest and instability. He said the ruling party would not allow space for efforts that undermine national stability.

The PNC opened its 2026 congress in Malé today, with more than 1,300 delegates attending the four-day event. The congress runs from 15 to 18 September and includes voting on proposed amendments to party regulations, as well as elections for members of key party bodies.
