PNC Elects Six Vice-Presidents in Congress Vote

The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has elected six vice-presidents following an internal digital vote held during the party’s ongoing national congress in Malé.

Youth Minister Abdulla Rafiu received the highest number of votes, securing 968, followed by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam with 964.

MP Fathimath Saudha received 923 votes, while MP Ibrahim Shujau secured 862. Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed received 833 votes and Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef secured 780 votes.

The six candidates were elected from a field of eight contenders competing for the party’s six vice-presidential positions.

MP Asma Rasheed and Local Government Authority  CEO Mohamed Nimal were unsuccessful. Nimal received 301 votes, while Asma secured 288.

Five of the eight candidates had previously served as PNC vice-presidents. They were Ahmed Shiyam, Mohamed Saeed, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Ibrahim Shujau and Mohamed Nimal.

The voting was conducted through a mobile application. Delegates attending the congress were required to scan a QR code to access the digital ballot, with each delegate given five minutes to cast and submit their votes.

The election is part of the 2026 PNC Congress, which began on 15 September in Malé and is scheduled to continue until 18 September.

More than 1,300 delegates are attending the four-day congress, which includes discussions on proposed amendments to the party’s internal regulations and elections for various governing bodies within the ruling party.
