Maldives Condemns Attempted Houthi Drone Attack Targeting Makkah
The Maldivian government has strongly condemned an attempted drone attack by Yemen’s Houthi movement targeting the Holy City of Makkah, warning that any threat to Islam’s holiest site is completely unacceptable and offensive to Muslims worldwide.
President Muizzu, in a post shared on X, said that the attempted strike was an unacceptable violation of the sanctity of Makkah and reaffirmed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia.

The statement praised the swift response of the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces, which successfully intercepted and destroyed the hostile drone south of Makkah before it could enter the city’s prohibited airspace. Saudi authorities confirmed that no casualties or damage were reported from the incident.
“Any act that threatens the safety and sanctity of Islam’s holiest city is completely unacceptable and deeply offensive to the entire Muslim Ummah,” the statement read, commending Saudi defence forces for safeguarding the city, its residents, and visiting pilgrims.
The Maldivian government called for an immediate cessation of hostile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and urged all involved parties to refrain from further escalation, advocating for dialogue and peaceful resolution to prevent broader instability in the region.
According to Al Jazeera, the incident triggered a security alert in Makkah, reportedly the first such alert in nearly a decade.
The attempted strike comes amid heightened regional tensions, which have seen an increase in drone and missile engagements across the Arabian Peninsula.
