Repair works on the western end of Ameenee Magu, near the Harbour Food Court, is progressing, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company completing Aggregate Base Course laying and the application of MC-30 prime coat on Segment 1 earlier this month.

MTCC has also completed 90 per cent of the subgrade repair works on the first segment. The remaining subgrade works and subsequent stages of the repair are expected to be completed by November.

The section was closed on 2 August after significant deterioration of the road surface, including uneven tarmac, bumps and potholes. MTCC is reconstructing the damaged section after the asphalt surface deteriorated less than two years after the road was resurfaced.

Ameenee Magu was previously resurfaced under an MVR 84.4 million contract awarded to the Road Development Corporation during the previous administration. Parts of the road later shifted and buckled unevenly, leading to the need for further repairs.

Authorities have previously attributed the deterioration to issues beneath the asphalt, including inadequate compaction of sub-base material, which allowed the road surface to shift under heavy traffic.

MTCC expects repair works on the segment to be completed by November.
