PNC Senate Passes Resolution to Hand Presidential Ticket to Muizzu Without Primary 

The Senate of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has passed a resolution calling for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to be awarded the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 election without a primary.

The resolution was submitted by PNC member Abdulla Ibrahim during the party’s ongoing congress and was approved unanimously by the 1,119 members present, according to the party.

The resolution cited what it described as Muizzu’s efforts to safeguard national independence and sovereignty, strengthen maritime monitoring and address the country’s financial and debt challenges without placing additional burdens on the public.

It also highlighted the administration’s economic diversification efforts, the Digital Maldives 2.0 initiative, the Ras Malé housing project and Muizzu’s positions on the rights of Palestinians.

Speaking on the resolution, PNC Chairperson and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla said the country’s future should be aligned with Muizzu’s vision and claimed that many Maldivians want the President to serve a second term. 

Abdul Raheem said the decision to award Muizzu the party’s presidential ticket without holding a primary was among the most important matters before the congress. He said the PNC’s priority was to place national interests first and argued that continuing along Muizzu’s policy direction was the path he believed would best serve the country.

The PNC leadership has previously identified securing Muizzu’s re-election in 2028 as the party’s central political objective.

The PNC Congress is being held in Malé from Tuesday to Friday, with more than 1,300 delegates attending.
