PNC Formally Awards 2028 Presidential Ticket to President Muizzu

The People’s National Congress (PNC) has formally awarded President Dr Mohamed Muizzu the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 election, allowing him to seek a second term without contesting a primary.

The decision was approved through a resolution passed unanimously by 1,119 members during a special session of the PNC Congress on Thursday. The resolution was submitted by party member Abdulla Ibrahim, representing the Fuvahmulah South constituency as a special delegate.

The ticket was formally presented to President Muizzu by PNC Chairperson and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla at a ceremony held at the Social Centre in Malé on Friday night, marking the conclusion of the party’s congress.

The resolution stated that President Muizzu should be granted a second term to continue the work of his administration. It cited a range of policies and initiatives undertaken since he assumed office in November 2023, including measures relating to national sovereignty, maritime security, economic management, housing, tourism, and digital development.

The resolution also stated that the party’s membership and the Maldivian public recognise and accept the services provided by President Muizzu.

Under the PNC’s constitution, a sitting president who is a party member can receive the presidential ticket for a second term without contesting a primary, subject to approval by the relevant party body.

The decision means President Muizzu has been formally selected as the PNC candidate for the 2028 presidential election following his victory in the 2023 presidential race.
