Maldivian Engineers Undergo Bridge Maintenance Training in China

A team of engineers from the Maldives’ Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development is in China for training on bridge maintenance and management, according to the Chinese ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua.
During the training, held from 15 to 26 September, the engineers will visit the Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge and Chaotianmen Yangtze River Bridge, both of which span the Yangtze River, which runs through China.

The Baijusi Bridge is a double-deck road-and-rail bridge, while the Chaotianmen Bridge is an arch bridge known for its large span.
The engineers also travelled on China’s high-speed rail system during their visit, according to the ambassador.

The ambassador said China is prepared to continue sharing its experience and expertise with the Maldives to strengthen local capacity in infrastructure maintenance and support the safe and sustainable operation of major bridges.
The training comes as China continues to provide technical assistance for the maintenance of the Sinamalé Bridge, also known as the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.
Maintenance and technical assessments of the bridge are currently being carried out by CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company, a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), under a three-year agreement signed in March 2024. The agreement includes bridge inspections, maintenance, development of maintenance records, and training for Maldivian technicians.
