Speaking at the inaugural PNC Congress 2026, which concluded on Friday. He contrasted that experience with his own administration’s approach to the judiciary, referring to his first public address after assuming office on 17 November 2023, when he said the judiciary had been freed from government influence. Muizzu called on the public to assess the judiciary’s independence from the start of his administration to the present, while stating that his government does not exert influence over the judiciary.

“I was told to go and check on their condition. To just check on them and return. So I went to see how they were doing. I felt deeply troubled. Here was someone who had served as president for 30 years, someone who rendered immense service to the nation, the leader who saved the country during the November 3 incident, among many other services. And alongside him were the Chief Justice, a Supreme Court justice, and another judge, all kept in a small cell or in very poor conditions. I came out immediately and relayed what they said. This was the task entrusted to me, something I personally witnessed.” he said.
