ACC Seeks Prosecution of Former MPL CEO and Procurement Head over Tender Violations

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to forward charges against a former Maldives Ports Limited, MPL chief executive officer and a former procurement department head to the Prosecutor General’s Office over the company’s purchase of 18 air-conditioning units in 2016 and 2017.

According to a press release by ACC, the commission made the decision on 16 September 2026, alleging that the AC units were purchased for MVR 1,083,998 at prices significantly above market rates.

The commission is seeking prosecution against Mohamed Junaid, who was serving as MPL’s Chief Executive Officer at the time, and Abdul Wahhab, who headed the company’s Procurement Department.

According to the commission, the procurement was made from a sole proprietorship with no prior experience in the field and links to individuals under investigation in the case.

The commission said the purchases were made without a public tender and without a decision by MPL’s Board of Directors. It said the procurement therefore contravened state-owned enterprise procurement guidelines and strategies that were in force at the time.
