MIRA Discloses 33 Parties Owing More Than MVR 1 Million in Unpaid Taxes
The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has publicly named 33 individuals and entities with unsettled tax liabilities exceeding MVR 1 million each, stepping up efforts to recover substantial debts owed to the state.
The public disclosure follows established MIRA guidelines regarding non-compliant taxpayers who repeatedly fail to file returns or settle outstanding assessments despite formal warnings.
According to MIRA, prior to releasing the names, they directly contacted each party via telephone and SMS to outline the legal penalties and potential enforcement actions associated with prolonged non-payment.
The list includes prominent public figures, including former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Bassam Adeel Jaleel, who was banned for life from all football-related activities and fined nearly USD 1.23 million in a ruling issued on September 11 for violations of the sport’s Code of Ethics. Bassam is currently serving a 32-year prison sentence following his conviction on charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering in connection with FAM.
The published list also encompasses several prominent resort properties with outstanding tax liabilities exceeding MVR 1 million.
The tax authority reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing all available legal mechanisms under its Enforcement Policy to recover unpaid state revenue. MIRA stressed that these recovery measures will be applied strictly and without discrimination across all non-compliant taxpayers.
Taxpayers with overdue filings or outstanding tax bills are urged to file their returns and settle their liabilities immediately to avoid further enforcement action.
