President Marks 61st UN Anniversary, Calls for Global Action on Debt Crisis

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised the urgent requirement for viable, long-term solutions to ensure debt sustainability and address the mounting sovereign debt burdens facing vulnerable states, placing financial relief at the heart of the Maldives’ global agenda.

Marking the 61st anniversary of the country’s UN membership yesterday, President Muizzu declared that the nation is ready to take on greater responsibility in shaping the international body. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to advocating for meaningful UN reform and securing equitable representation, ensuring that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) participate as equal global partners.

Alongside debt sustainability, the President highlighted the Maldives’ ongoing advocacy for climate adaptation, stressing the need for improved access to adequate and affordable international financing. He also called for expanded opportunities for SIDS to build and strengthen their local institutional capabilities, equipping these nations to manage complex economic and environmental challenges while contributing meaningfully to a resilient global economy.

Reflecting on six decades of membership since joining the organisation on 21 September 1965, President Muizzu acknowledged the UN’s vital contribution to the nation’s development, including its support during the Maldives’ graduation from Least Developed Country status. He emphasised that this strategic partnership remains essential as the Maldives works towards its target of becoming a fully developed nation by 2040.

The President outlined the country’s expanding diplomatic leadership within the UN system, noting its past service as Vice-President of the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council. He highlighted upcoming memberships on the Commission on the Status of Women and the Economic and Social Council, while confirming active campaigns for elected seats on both the Human Rights Council and the UN Security Council.

Reaffirming dedication to international law and the UN Charter, President Muizzu underscored that diplomacy, dialogue, and inclusive multilateral governance are vital to resolving global issues. He concluded that while the Maldives entered the UN in 1965 seeking recognition, it now stands prepared to lead efforts towards a future where development leaves no country behind.
