STELCO Managing Director Dr Ali Azwar has said the government’s decision to expand the company’s electricity services nationwide will bring significant benefits to citizens, including improved service quality, lower costs and greater operational efficiency.
Speaking at the inauguration of a training programme for station managers and interim powerhouse heads in newly served areas, Azwar said STELCO teams are currently conducting surveys as part of the expansion.
STELCO began its first surveys in Addu City and Thinadhoo City on Thursday, following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to transfer utility operations from Fenaka Corporation Limited to STELCO.
The company said its teams are assessing the condition of utility infrastructure in the newly assigned areas as part of the transfer of responsibilities.
The latest training programme covers newly served areas in Baa, Lhaviyani and Meemu atolls, as well as K. Huraa.
Azwar said the decision to expand STELCO’s services nationwide was made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu after considering public views from different atolls.
He also highlighted STELCO’s 75-year history and said its reputation had been built through the work of employees who provided electricity services under different company names over the years.
STELCO is also conducting a training programme under the expansion plan, held from September 20 to 22, intended to prepare newly appointed managers and station heads to operate powerhouses in accordance with STELCO’s regulations and standards.
The programme covers managers’ roles and responsibilities, coordination between STELCO departments and island powerhouses, and administrative, technical, financial, safety and operational procedures.
It also aims to strengthen coordination between island powerhouses and STELCO’s regional and corporate departments and provide managers with information needed to address operational challenges and make decisions.
Azwar called on managers in the newly added areas to maintain STELCO’s service standards and work closely with local communities.
