Thinadhoo Council Introduces Cash Gifts for Newborns Registered in the City 

The Thinadhoo City Council has introduced cash payments of up to MVR 2,000 for newborns whose births are officially registered in the city.

The regulation, titled the “Regulation on Providing a Cash Gift for Every Newborn Registered in Thinadhoo City 2026”, aims to encourage timely birth registration while providing financial support to families.

Under the regulation, newborns must be named and registered with Thinadhoo City Council within the timeframe prescribed by law and cannot be registered in another island or city.

A MVR 1,500 cash gift will be provided if either one or both parents are registered residents of Thinadhoo City, provided the child’s birth is registered in the city within the required period.

A higher payment of MVR 2,000 will be available where neither parent is a registered resident of Thinadhoo City, if they choose to register the child’s birth in Thinadhoo within the statutory registration period. 

Parents or legal guardians must submit the required birth notification documents and bank details to the council to receive the payment.

The regulation was issued by the Secretariat of the Thinadhoo City Council under the Decentralisation Act, and took effect following its public notice.

The council has previously introduced measures aimed at retaining and increasing Thinadhoo’s population. In November 2025, the council reinstated a MVR 5,000 fee for individuals seeking to give up their Thinadhoo citizenship, following a public consultation on the measure.
