VP Meets UN Secretary-General to Discuss Climate Action and Regional Concerns

Maldivian Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York today to discuss pressing climate challenges and regional instability.

During the meeting, Vice President Latheef emphasized that climate change represents an ongoing reality for the Maldives, directly impacting the archipelagic nation’s daily life and socio-economic development. He commended the Secretary-General for his persistent global advocacy regarding climate change and the vulnerabilities facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Outlining the key priorities of the Maldives at UNGA 81, Vice President Latheef highlighted climate resilience, debt sustainability, and comprehensive reform of the United Nations system. He also urged the effective implementation of the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States (ABAS) to address the unique challenges of island nations.

Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ solidarity with the Maldives, explicitly acknowledging the acute environmental threats the country confronts. He reiterated the UN’s commitment to advancing ambitious global climate initiatives and maintaining strong collaboration with Maldivian authorities to mitigate these effects.

In addition to climate policy and institutional reform, both parties reviewed regional security developments, focusing particularly on ongoing concerns in Palestine.
