Female Officers Essential to Law Enforcement and Security: Minister Geela 

Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali has described female police officers serving in law enforcement as a vital pillar of the Maldives Police Service, highlighting their important role in maintaining public safety and national security.

The Minister made these remarks while speaking at a special forum held yesterday at Dusit Thani Maldives to mark Women in Policing Day.

She further said that female officers play an invaluable role in resolving sensitive issues and serving on the frontlines of technical fields.

The event was attended by the Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed and executive officers of the police service. The President of the Maldives Women in Policing Committee, Chief Inspector of Police, Waseema Hassan, also attended the forum.

“Looking back at the history of the police service, I highlight that you women are one of its most vital pillars. In 2004, when the Maldives Police Service was established as a civil law enforcement agency, only 64 female officers were serving in its ranks”, she said. “However, the fact that this number has multiplied today is a symbol of how much society relies on you”. 

Praising the efforts made to establish gender equality within the institution, the Minister stated that targeted training programs and robust policies have led to a growing number of women showing interest in joining the police force. 

She highlighted that, amidst evolving challenges, the positive impact of female officers is evident across the country, particularly through their successes in responding to high-risk situations, strengthening community relations, resolving sensitive issues and serving on the front lines of technical fields.
