Fertility Care Trust Fund Yields 25 Successful Births as Government Spends MVR 15.2 Million

The Maldivian government has spent MVR 15.2 million through the Fertility Care Trust Fund since 2024 to assist 105 individuals, resulting in 25 successful births, Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali announced.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Geela revealed that 35 people who received assistance through the fund since 14 November 2024 had subsequently conceived, with 25 of those pregnancies resulting in successful births.

The minister also provided an update on assistance for reproductive health conditions, with 921 people receiving support for conditions including endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in 2024, followed by 903 recipients in 2025.

Opportunities were also provided for 50 couples to undergo in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Of these, five couples received financial assistance in 2024 and three in 2025, according to Geela.

Beyond fertility treatment, the minister said 28 thalassaemia patients had been sent abroad for bone marrow transplants. The government has allocated funding for up to 10 such procedures each year, at MVR 1 million per patient.

Geela also outlined progress on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledges, saying 244 of his 478 commitments fall under her ministry’s portfolio, covering 835 projects and 8,384 activities.

She said 67 per cent of the tasks associated with those commitments had been completed.

The ministry is overseeing healthcare infrastructure projects valued at MVR 5.98 billion, covering 168 projects, including 40 hospitals, 22 health centres and 89 facility upgrades.

According to Geela, 22 projects have been completed, 151 are currently ongoing and 17 are scheduled to begin this year. A further 33 projects are expected to be completed this year.
