Maldives, UAE Discuss Investments in Renewable Energy and Infrastructure

Maldivian climate officials and diplomatic and industry leaders from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) held a virtual roundtable to explore potential cooperation and investment opportunities to address the nation’s infrastructure challenges.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy stated that the session, held on Saturday, was co-chaired by Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment and Energy Mohamed Faiz and Heba Aljneibi, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the UAE Embassy. The meeting brought together key representatives from the UAE Embassy, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), and Global South Utilities (GSU).
During the session, Ministry officials presented national priorities across three key sectors. In the energy sector, discussions centred on modernising electricity networks, advancing battery energy storage systems, and integrating additional renewable energy sources to reduce diesel dependence.
Regarding water and wastewater, officials discussed expanding utility infrastructure and exploring the integration of renewable energy into energy-intensive desalination operations. The talks also covered waste management upgrades and potential partnerships for regional waste-to-energy projects.
Capacity building, technical knowledge exchange, and operational partnerships will serve as key cross-cutting priorities for future collaboration, according to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.
Ministry held a productive virtual roundtable discussion today with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, Masdar, and Global South Utilities (GSU). Our dialogue focused on potential cooperation in several key areas including, Renewable energy and grid modernization, Water and wastewater infrastructure and Waste management and waste-to-energy .
