Rehabilitating offenders and guiding their successful integration back into society must remain the fundamental focus of correctional personnel, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan stressed during a graduation ceremony at Maafushi Prison on Thursday.

Presiding over the graduation of the third Certificate 1 in Basic Correctional Officers Training programme, Minister Ihusaan noted that prison personnel play an essential role in national security by overseeing individuals from court conviction through their eventual release.

He urged the new recruits to approach their daily duties with absolute integrity, warning that any breach of ethics compromises the nation’s trust.

Out of 33 initial candidates, 32 completed the foundational course, which included three officers with prior induction training. To strengthen offender reform efforts, the service introduced a new “Introduction to Rehabilitation” module into the basic curriculum for the first time.

Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer urged the class to uphold the high standards symbolic of their uniform. He reminded officers to protect human rights, resist illegal pressures, and treat all incarcerated individuals with compassion and respect throughout their careers.
