A man from Th. Thimarafushi has been sentenced to seven months and six days in prison after pleading guilty to stealing MVR 8,150 from his wife’s bank account.
The Th. Thimarafushi Magistrate Court convicted Mohamed Moosa of theft under Article 211(a), read with Article 210(b)(3) of the Penal Code, in a verdict delivered on 23 June 2026.
According to the court judgment, Moosa withdrew the money from his wife Fathimath Nazla’s bank account on 30 May for his personal use. He admitted to the offence and entered a guilty plea, which the court accepted after confirming it was made voluntarily.
The court classified the offence as a Class 5 felony, carrying a basic sentence of nine months and 18 days. His early guilty plea reduced the sentence to seven months and six days. The court also deducted three months, two days and 12 hours spent in pre-trial custody from the sentence.
Moosa asked the court to convert the prison term into a fine, citing his role as the primary caregiver for his child while his wife worked and stating that he had no previous criminal record. However, the court ruled that a fine was not legally available for the offence under the applicable law.
