President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assured the public that the government will deliver between 15,000 and 16,000 housing units in the Greater Malé Area over the next 18 to 24 months through various ongoing and upcoming projects.
Speaking on the President’s Office podcast “The Pulse,” President Dr Mohamed Muizzu detailed that the 5,000-unit project constructed by Eagle Hills in Hulhumale’ under the Ras Male’ development initiative will offer the most affordable social housing category for citizens. Construction on this major project is projected to see significant completion, including finishing work on most flats and supporting infrastructure, by August or September 2028.
“A large number of these flats are likely to be completed within that timeframe,” the President said, adding that Hulhumale’ alone will see roughly 10,000 housing units secured during the current administration term, combining ongoing 4,000-unit projects and private sector partnerships where units will be allocated under state-managed lists.
Additionally, he highlighted plans for 4,000 housing units in Gulhifalhu under an Indian Line of Credit (LOC). Administrative processes between both governments for the LOC project are nearing completion, with physical construction expected to commence once contracted.
The President reaffirmed that the government remains fully committed to executing these target numbers specifically within the Male’ region to tackle the capital’s persistent housing crisis.
However, despite the President’s pledge to deliver 15,000 to 16,000 housing units within the next 18 to 24 months, the Bank of Maldives Affordable Home Leasing Company project is the only housing project currently underway, while other major social housing initiatives remain in the planning or preparatory stages.
