Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim expressed deep concern over severe street flooding in the capital triggered by heavy rainfall last night, placing the blame on the sudden removal of water pumps without a backup plan and a divided stormwater management system.

In a post on social media platform X, Mayor Azim stated that the significant progress made over the past two years to resolve Male’s chronic flooding issues had been undone, leaving residents facing unacceptable hardship during the latest torrential downpour.

“The severity of this issue arose because water pumps in the most flood-prone areas were suddenly removed for road development projects without any backup plan,” Azim said. “Furthermore, dividing the maintenance of Male’s storm water system among various state institutions presents a major obstacle to managing the entire system effectively.”

The Mayor urged relevant authorities to act immediately and collaborate to deliver a swift, permanent solution for residents. He called for urgent temporary replacements for the removed pumps and demanded that the capital’s water drainage system be brought under a unified management structure.
