Villimale’ Hospital has temporarily relocated all of its health services to the “Amaan Hiyaa” building in Villimale’, effective October 14, 2026, to clear the existing facility for major redevelopment.
The temporary move to the former children’s shelter facility follows the completion of necessary renovation works to accommodate healthcare operations. According to an official notice, all general healthcare and medical services previously offered at the main facility are now being provided out of the “Amaan Hiyaa” building until further notice.
The relocation comes as part of government plans to construct a 112-bed tertiary facility, named the ‘China-Maldives Friendship Hospital’, on the existing hospital site. Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib stated during a community meeting with Villimale’ residents that physical construction for the project is scheduled to begin by the middle of this year and will be completed within two years.
The project is funded through Chinese grant assistance, which was secured during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to China in January last year.
An agreement for the hospital design was signed with the Chinese government in early June, following which a consultant selection team was finalised to process tender documentation ahead of project implementation. Minister Muththalib assured residents that the completed facility will feature fully modern healthcare resources to resolve the island’s long-standing medical infrastructure challenges.
