The ministry said the next Secretary-General must uphold the UN Charter and international law, with a commitment to dignity, justice and the equal application of international law. Peace and security, sustainable development and human rights should remain central to the organisation’s work.

The Maldives also stressed the importance of an effective and inclusive UN for small island developing states. It said all member states should have meaningful opportunities to contribute to addressing global challenges and shaping international decisions.

The government called for a transparent, inclusive and merit-based selection process, and said it looked forward to working with other member states to strengthen the organisation’s ability to deliver for all peoples.
