President Muizzu commended the coordinated emergency response, praising the prompt mobilisation of responders who acted swiftly to safeguard the island, protect neighbouring homes, and ensure public safety during the crisis.

He extended sincere gratitude to the Maldives National Defence Force, the Maldives Police Service, and fire and rescue teams deployed from Funadhoo Airport, Maafaru Airport, and JW Marriott Maldives Resort.

The President also recognised the vital assistance provided on the ground by Shaviyani Atoll Hospital, the Maldives National Cadet Corps, the Funadhoo Council, government agencies, and local community members who joined forces to bring the blaze under control.

The flames quickly spread from the petrol shed to adjacent buildings, destroying a residential home, a motorcycle and engine repair garage, a warehouse, and a vehicle garage.

According to the Maldives Police Service, 18 people received medical treatment following the incident. A firefighter and a hospital worker were treated for smoke inhalation, while 16 others sustained minor injuries while escaping an explosion at the scene or required care for acute shock and anxiety.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also provided temporary accommodation and meals for five days to 11 residents left homeless after the fire broke out in the petrol shed.
