The Asia-Pacific Action Alliance on Human Resources for Health (AAAH) has conferred an international award on the Maldives, recognising its national initiatives to revitalise primary healthcare and strengthen public health delivery.
Officials presented the accolade to the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare during the 14th AAAH conference held in Bali, Indonesia. The award commends the collaborative efforts between the ministry’s Primary Health Care Revitalisation Team and the World Health Organization (WHO) country office in the Maldives.
The alliance selected the Maldives as one of two recipients in the Primary Health Care Team category. Across the biennial conference, judges chose just four winners from a competitive pool of 174 nominations spanning multiple regions. The remaining awards honoured initiatives in Health Profession Education and Health Worker Well-Being.
The Ministry of Health described the recognition as a significant milestone in its ongoing drive to expand primary healthcare nationwide and accelerate progress towards universal health coverage.
The initiative follows a two-phase rollout structure. Health authorities have completed the first phase—delivering essential training across all targeted islands—and have commenced operational implementation within Faafu Atoll. According to Dr Ashraf, the ministry now plans to scale the programme across the entire archipelago.
