Former President Abdulla Yameen, the presidential candidate of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) Coalition, has signed his candidacy form for the upcoming presidential elections.
In a tweet, PPM confirmed that Yameen has signed the required documents, which will be submitted to the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM). The completed paperwork has been returned to the party office through the Correctional Service.

Notably, Yameen is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence following his conviction on corruption charges related to bribery and money laundering convictions.
He has appealed this verdict in the High Court. However, the court has ruled that if he fails to win the appeal, he will lose his eligibility to contest the election. Progress on the appeal cases in the High Court has been delayed due to the leave taken by some of the judges.
Despite the questions surrounding Yameen’s ability to participate in the presidential election, the PPM/PNC coalition is pressing forward with their campaign.
ECM recently opened the nomination process for candidates vying in the 9th September election.
