Muizzu’s nomination has been made as a precaution, in the event that their preferred candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen, becomes ineligible to participate in the primary election.

The primary opposition coalition has officially endorsed former President Yameen as their preferred nominee for the upcoming presidential election.

However, the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has affirmed that he currently fails to meet the requirements outlined in Article 109(f) of the Constitution, due to an ongoing 11-year prison sentence stemming from allegations of corruption and money laundering.

In accordance with constitutional provisions, such appeals are subject to determination by a panel comprising all justices of the Supreme Court, and the decision reached by the Supreme Court is considered final.
