Wave Surges Sweep Through Greater Male Region
Yesterday evening, a high tide unexpectedly swept through the Sinamale’ bridge, carrying away drivers and their vehicles. This surge of water caught commuters off-guard, resulting in injuries for the drivers.
Beyond the bridge area, the high tide was observed in the Raalhugandu area, where a significant number of rocks were reported to have accumulated on the roads. This combination of water and rocky debris has prompted concerns about safe travel and road conditions in the vicinity.
The Maldives Meteorological Service noted that the height of the afternoon wave reached 0.94 metres, indicative of a moderate tidal surge across the city.
The accumulation of sand on the bridge has posed an additional challenge by escalating the hazard for motorists, with those on motorbikes facing particularly slippery conditions. In response, local authorities have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while traversing these affected areas.
The Maldives Meteorological Service extended its white alert for severe weather conditions. The warning now includes the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorms ranging up to 35 mph, from F. Atoll to Addu City.
Commuters are strongly advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and heed advisories and alerts issued by the Meteorological Department. Safety measures and precautions are highly encouraged until the situation stabilises.
