In a significant development, the Supreme Court has today declared that former President Abdullah Yameen does not meet the eligibility criteria to participate in the upcoming presidential election.

This ruling comes in response to a case brought forward by Yameen himself after his candidacy form was rejected by the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM).

One of the key factors leading to the ECM’s decision to deny Yameen’s candidacy, is his ongoing 11-year imprisonment.

ECM cited that his current prison sentence exceeds 12 months, rendering him ineligible according to the prescribed criteria. Additionally, the ECM’s underscored a validated debt situation, pointing out that the fine associated with his conviction had not been settled within the specified timeframe.

As per the Constitutional requirements, a potential candidate must have a clean record without any criminal convictions resulting in a prison sentence of more than 12 months within the last three years.
