Qasim Ibrahim, the presidential candidate from the Jumhooree Party (JP) has announced his pledge to complete the construction of 30,000 flats and ensure their handover within a year and a half of assuming power.

During a panel discussion held in M. Kunooz last night, JP engaged with the public, addressing inquiries regarding their proposed housing projects and the potential for timely completion.

A participant raised concerns about unfulfilled housing promises observed in previous administrations and sought clarification on the approach under JP rule.

Responding to the question, Moosa Nizar, former Keyodhoo MP and a member of the JP’s manifesto committee, attributed housing project delays to governmental policies. He affirmed that such policies would be revised under JP’s leadership.

Nizar further elaborated on the prevailing practice of relying on foreign financial aid for housing projects, which often results in project commencement delays. He highlighted the usual time frame of two to three years for securing foreign funding and an additional year for project initiation.

Contrasting this approach, Moosa Nizar emphasised that the JP intends to finance housing projects with domestic resources, avoiding dependency on foreign assistance.

He noted that allocating funds for housing initiatives within the state budget, akin to the substantial allocations for other sectors, would expedite project commencement.
