Former President Mohamed Nasheed has reached out to the European Union (EU) for assistance in securing the release of former President Abdullah Yameen.

Yameen, who has been handed an 11-year prison sentence on charges of bribery and money laundering, is being urged to free from jail to ensure a transparent and equitable presidential election scheduled for the upcoming month.

Nacho Sanchez Amor, a Member of the European Parliament, has been designated to lead a team responsible for overseeing the presidential election process. In the pursuit of diplomatic engagement, Sanchez Amor held a cordial meeting with Nasheed, during which matters concerning the election were discussed.

The assembly saw the presence of several notable figures, including the Secretary General of Parliament, the Councilor General, as well as MP Adam Shareef and MP Ali Azim.

In the meeting, Nasheed expressed his appeal to EU observers, seeking their involvement in facilitating the transfer of Yameen back to the house for the purpose of upholding the integrity of the forthcoming elections.

However, specific details regarding this request were not divulged.
