Vice Chairman and Spokesperson of the ECM, Ismail Habeeb, affirmed that the commission has striven to establish a transparent and unrestricted platform for the observation and monitoring of the forthcoming presidential election.
Among the pool of applicants, 4,545 hail from Maldivian media outlets, expressing their intention to closely follow and report on the electoral proceedings. An additional 3,607 applications have been submitted by individuals affiliated with political parties, associations, and unaffiliated citizens, aspiring to participate as election observers.
Habeeb disclosed that the ECM has also garnered keen interest from neighbouring Sri Lanka, amassing a total of 8,152 applications from this demographic. Currently, the commission is diligently engaged in the meticulous screening and accreditation of the received applications.
The structure of the election monitoring process is designed to involve approximately 14 observers per polling station, which amounts to 574 observers across the entire electoral landscape. This turnout of election monitors, according to Habeeb, exemplifies the ECM’s commitment to orchestrating a lawful and orderly election.
With the combined efforts of local Maldivian monitors, as well as international observers and monitors, Habeeb projected that the upcoming 2023 presidential election will achieve an unparalleled level of scrutiny and oversight. Notably, over 150 foreign dignitaries are anticipated to partake in the observation of the electoral proceedings.
This year’s presidential election is notably marked by a record-breaking participation of candidates within the framework of the multi-party system, signifying an exceptional democratic engagement within the nation.
