This year’s final parliamentary session is set to commence on August 21, 2023, after it concluded its second session of the year on June 22 and subsequently entered a recess.
Notably, the concluding session of the Parliament witnessed the presentation of a no-confidence motion directed at the Speaker of the Parliament.
Elected representatives have been duly notified that the proceedings will reconvene on the forthcoming Monday, marking the inauguration of the final session for the year. However, as this final session begins, the formation of the parliamentary committees remains pending, impeding the progress of their work.
An extraordinary session conducted independently from the Parliament yielded an approved report. This development was further accentuated by the convergence of certain House members joined The Democrats, resulting in the resumption of committee formation. The House of Representatives initiated a motion of no-confidence, targeting both Speaker Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah.
Presently, the functions of the parliamentary committees have encountered an impasse, with several crucial matters awaiting committee deliberation and other significant tasks likewise stalled. The progression of the no-confidence motion has been postponed owing to the unavailability of the requisite committee.
