MDP Announces Lowest Crime Rates in Five Year Span

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced a decline in the country’s crime rates over the past five years.
During a press conference held at Salt Cafe’ and Restaurant in Male’ City, Mariya Ahmed Didi, the spokesperson for the party’s candidate, revealed that the nation has experienced its most subdued levels of criminal activity in half a decade.
Mariya underscored that the incidence of criminal offenses has undergone a substantial reduction, surpassing 50%, over the course of the last five years when compared to the preceding five-year period. She referenced specific statistics to illustrate this decline. Notably, from 2013 to 2018, a total of 5,587 cases of physical violence were reported.
However, this number witnessed a remarkable decrease to 2,777 cases between 2019 and 2023. Similarly, instances of theft, which numbered 26,146 cases during the period 2013-2018, displayed a discernible decrease, amounting to 18,748 cases from 2019 to 2023.
Mariya also brought attention to the loss of life resulting from criminal activities. Between 2013 and 2018, a total of 41 individuals lost their lives due to various criminal incidents.
However, this somber statistic experienced a notable decrease in the subsequent five-year period, with the count of individuals killed in connection to different crimes amounting to seven between 2019 and 2023.
In light of these statistics, Mariya emphasised the considerable efforts that have been dedicated to law enforcement in order to curtail crime. She highlighted the establishment of a secure environment aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the populace.
