An increasing number of individuals seeking medical attention due to unusual symptoms of intoxication has raised concerns among psychiatrists at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Dr. Arif Mohamed, a psychiatrist at IGMH, took to Facebook to address the worrisome trend. He stated that the hospital’s psychiatric team is troubled by the rising number of patients exhibiting symptoms resembling those of stimulant abuse. These individuals have been displaying aggressive behavior that poses a threat to others.
Dr. Arif suggested that this concerning pattern might be linked to either an elevated supply of such substances or increased drug potency. While stimulants are often perceived as harmless by many, he emphasized that they carry severe health, psychological, and societal repercussions. When combined with other substances, such as opioids, these negative effects can be further intensified.
According to insider information, there has been a recent surge in the admission of individuals to the hospital’s emergency room due to episodes of drunkenness. These incidents involve behaviors such as spitting on others, causing property damage, and engaging in verbal abuse. Disturbingly, some of these patients have even directed violence towards medical staff and vandalized hospital property.
One source recounted an incident in which a male patient brought into the hospital proceeded to create chaos by throwing objects and causing havoc throughout the premises. Security personnel found it challenging to approach and subdue him, underscoring the severity of the situation.
While doctors at the facility have expressed their apprehensions regarding this unsettling trend, the pertinent authorities have not yet provided any official statement regarding their awareness of the matter.
