Drug-Related Offenses Account for 69.4% of Convictions, Shows July Statistics

The Maldives Correctional Service has released its July 2023 monthly statistics, revealing that a notable 69.4% of those sentenced were convicted for drug-related offenses, underscoring the ongoing challenge of substance abuse.

Arrivals
During July 2023, a total of 43 individuals entered the prison system. Among them, 36 were sentenced for various offenses, while 7 individuals were in detention awaiting trial.
Crime Breakdown
The types of crimes for which individuals were sentenced in July are as follows:
- 69.4% were convicted for drug-related offenses, reflecting the persistent issue of substance abuse.
- 2.8% were sentenced for threatening behavior.
- 8.3% faced incarceration due to burglary and looting.
- 2.8% were convicted of fraud and deception.
- 5.6% were found guilty of unlawful seizure of property.
- 8.3% were incarcerated for assault and battery.
- A further 2.8% were sentenced for various other crimes.
Release
Conversely, during the same period, 62 individuals were released from the prison system. Of those, 55 had completed their sentences, and 7 were released while their trials were still pending.
DETAILS OF RELEASE
The modes of release were diverse, comprising:
- 25 individuals released after serving their full sentences.
- 18 who benefited from clemency.
- 10 granted parole.
- 2 individuals released and handed over to the National Drug Agency (NDA).
- 7 individuals released following the overturning of court orders to remand them.
