An amendment to the Higher Education and Training Act has been proposed, which could elevate colleges to university status after a decade of operation.

The proposed amendment, put forth by Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau, is set to be introduced in Parliament tomorrow.

Currently, according to the existing law, an educational institution can be registered as a university only if it has been operating continuously within the country for at least 20 years or if it has been registered and operating as a foreign university, recognised by its government in another country, for a minimum of 10 years.

The new amendment aims to alter these criteria, extending university status to institutions that have been continuously operating as colleges within Maldives for a period of 10 years.

Additionally, institutions that have been registered and operating as a foreign university, recognised by the government of that respective country for at least five years, will also be eligible for this status change.
