Ahmed Faiz Mohmmed, the Head of Administration, presented the proposal to the committee members, indicating that the parliament is anticipated to allocate MVR 187 million for the upcoming year.

The additional MVR 3.6 million is intended to cover the expenses associated with the increased number of elected members in the 20th parliament, which is set to commence next year.

Traditionally, the secretariat’s budget is presented to the Finance Ministry after discussions with the committee. However, due to recent disputes over committee reconstitution, the budget has been submitted directly to the Ministry.

Furthermore, a component known as New Policy Investigation was initially proposed to receive a maximum of MVR 5 million. After consultations with the Finance Ministry, this figure has been adjusted to MVR 4.2 million.

Faiz stated that the finalisation of the budget will involve consultation with the President’s Office and the ministry.

The Elections Commission has confirmed that next year’s parliamentary elections will add six new seats, increasing the total number of MPs from 87 to 93.
