The Majlis Secretariat has unveiled a revised budget proposal, opting to enhance staff allowances rather than implementing a direct salary increment.

The announcement was made during a presentation to the Parliament’s General Purpose Committee, with the Secretariat highlighting the need for an additional MVR 4.6 million to accommodate the desired staff earnings increments.

Secretary General Fathimath Niusha explained the reasoning behind this decision, pointing out that the basic salaries of majlis staff are relatively high when compared to those of other state entities. She elaborated that a salary increment would necessitate increased allocations for pension and overtime, potentially burdening the budget.

The proposed changes to allowances are as follows:

1. Changing the current “Parliament Service” allowance of MVR 200 for each day attended to an attendance allowance.

2. Introducing a “Parliamentary Service Allowance” equivalent to 20 percent of the basic salary.

3. Increasing the allowance for holders of Master’s Certificates from MVR 1500 to MVR 2000.

4. Raising the allowance for holders of Degree Certificates from MVR 1000 to MVR 1500.

5. Enhancing the allowance for holders of Diploma Certificates from MVR 700 to MVR 1000.

6. Increasing the allowance for holders of Technical Certificates from MVR 500 to MVR 700.

Previously, the parliament had proposed an estimated budget of MVR 186 million. With the inclusion of these allowance increments, the budget may now approach approximately MVR 190 million.
