In a statement released on the platform X, today, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu conveyed his aspiration to encourage a higher participation of women, urging them to contest and secure seats in the forthcoming parliamentary elections under the PPM-PNC banner. He advocated for the coalition to actively support women in achieving a minimum of 20 percent representation in the parliamentary seats.
During the presidential election campaign, Muizzu outlined commitments to amending laws, regulations, and government policies to empower women throughout his leadership.
Notably, there are currently no female members representing the PPM-PNC in the existing parliamentary session.
The Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) anticipates conducting the parliamentary elections in March or April of the following year, where members will be elected for 93 constituencies.
