In a decision announced today, the Parliament has once again extended its current session until the 18th of this month.
This marks the second extension for the ongoing third session, which was initially prolonged until the end of the previous month, citing crucial matters such as the budget that required additional attention.
Presiding over the commencement of today’s session, Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Aslam, addressed the necessity of the extension, citing pending important matters that warrant further deliberation.
The majority of the current session has been overshadowed by the no-confidence motion against former Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. Utilising various articles of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, Nasheed adjourned the Parliament sessions on multiple occasions.
Subsequently, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) filed a case in the Supreme Court, leading to a ruling declaring the suspension of parliament as illegal.
Following the court’s decision, Nasheed voluntarily resigned from his position as the Speaker of Parliament.
