The PPM/PNC coalition has formalised plans to conduct its parliamentary primary on the 23rd of this month.
Following a Senate meeting, the coalition leadership also outlined the nomination process and the deadline for party affiliations for those intending to participate in the primary.
Chairing the People’s National Congress (PNC), Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) shared details with the press, revealing that the primary nomination window spans from the 7th to the 11th of this month. The specific constituencies for the primary will be determined based on the received forms, Abdul Raheem explained.
While the coalition has expanded its reach with alliances in the presidential election, the decision has been made to restrict participation in the parliamentary elections to PPM/PNC members exclusively, Abdul Raheem emphasised.
Addressing collaborations with the MDA and MNP, new entrants to the coalition during the presidential election, Abdulla noted that no decision has been finalised regarding their inclusion in the parliamentary elections.
He underscored the significance of securing a clear majority in parliament for the continuity of the current government. Anticipation runs high for a decisive outcome in the parliamentary elections, with hopes pinned on the PNC securing a “super majority.”
Currently, the PPM/PNC alliance holds four parliamentary seats. The PPM boasts a membership of over 38,000 individuals, while the PNC has 3,159 members. The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has received upwards of 10,000 nomination forms for the upcoming primary.
