In a session held today, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam announced that the parliamentary debate on the government’s budget for the upcoming year will be extended until 5 pm.
This decision aims to provide ample time for thorough deliberations on the proposed budget.
The Budget Review Committee, having met on Thursday night, unanimously approved a budget of MVR 49.8 billion for the fiscal year ahead. During the committee’s deliberations, two amendments to the budget report were presented, further shaping the discourse on fiscal allocations.
Each member of the Parliament will be allocated seven minutes to contribute to the debate, as per the committee’s recommendation. Speaker Mohamed Aslam emphasised the importance of allowing sufficient time for discussions on the proposed budget, leading to the extension of the session until 5 pm.
Notably, the government initially proposed a budget of MVR 49.5 billion for the upcoming year. However, the Budget Review Committee’s amendments resulted in adjustments to allocations for various projects. While the budget for some projects was reduced, others witnessed an increase in the allocated funds.
