Maldives Correctional Service has stated that Former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is currently under investigation for attending the signing ceremony of the People’s National Front (PNF), a party led by him.

Yameen, currently serving an 11-year jail sentence related to the MMPRC scam, officially joined the PNF during a signing event held at the party’s office on Sunday.

Yameen had previously been placed under house arrest on October 1 following his party’s victory in the presidential elections. Corrections officials informed him on November 1 that attending political meetings and addressing supporters at the party office violated the terms of his house arrest, with a warning of potential restrictions if repeated.

Despite a period of relative political inactivity, Yameen, who officially left the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on the 23rd of last month, attended the PNF office on the 26th to engage in the recruitment process.

The Corrections had previously noted that this incident was also under investigation, though no further details have been disclosed.

The newly formed PNF, registered under the name of Yameen’s son, Zain Abdullah Yameen, is informally associated with Yameen as one of its founders.

The Prisons and Parole Act stipulates that an offender can become an ordinary member of a political party but is prohibited from actively participating in the party’s political activities.
