Education Ministry Probes Allegations of Bullying and Assault at Salahuddin School
The Education Ministry has initiated an investigation into disturbing allegations of bullying and physical assault involving a first-grade student at Salahuddin School in Hulhumale’ Phase II.
The incident, which occurred on December 12, 2023, came to light when the family of the affected student reported that he had been subjected to bullying for over five months. The family had previously brought the matter to the attention of the school, alleging a lack of adequate action.
The Education Ministry confirmed yesterday that an investigation is underway and assured that “due punishment” will be administered to those found guilty.
Salahuddin School, the educational institution at the center of the investigation, has not issued an immediate comment regarding the allegations.
According to the family, the student returned home on Tuesday with a patch of hair and his uniform shorts cut. When the family approached the class teacher seeking clarification, they were informed that the student had purportedly cut his own hair and shorts during an art class.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the school’s response, the family highlighted that a teacher was not present in the classroom during the incident. The family further reported that the student responsible for the act admitted to it, subsequently apologising to the affected student’s family.
Alarming details emerged during the family’s account, revealing a pattern of bullying behaviours directed at other students in the class. The family asserts that this group of students, known for their bullying tendencies, is causing distress to others.
Concerns over the well-being of the first grader escalated as the family disclosed incidents of the student returning home with broken pencils and red blisters on his skin, suggestive of potential pencil-related injuries.
The family has described the student as traumatised, exhibiting resistance to attending school. The Education Ministry’s investigation aims to uncover the facts surrounding the alleged bullying and assault, with repercussions expected for those found responsible.
