The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Government of Maldives, has issued a statement acknowledging the existence of derogatory remarks targeting foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals on various social media platforms.
The statement read that the Government of Maldives has emphasised that these opinions are of a personal nature and do not reflect the official views of the Maldivian government.
The statement further read that the Government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners.
Moreover, the statement also highlighted that the relevant authorities will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks.
The issued statement comes in response to criticism directed at two deputy ministers in the Maldivian government. Their recent social media posts, which insulted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indians, have sparked a significant wave of backlash.
